Pte. Kevin Thomas “Mickey” McKay
Our Hero and Friend
Kevin grew up in Horseshoe Valley where he attended W.R. Best Public School and Eastview Secondary School. Kevin was a goaltender with Oro Minor Hockey. He trained as a carpenter at Georgian College and helped to build many homes in this area.
Kevin had a keen desire to help people and enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry at the age of twenty-one. Deployed to Afghanistan in the autumn of 2009, he was subsequently assigned, with his unit, to the village of Nakonay, Panjwaii District, one of the most dangerous areas in the world. Their security patrols enabled the children of the area to attend schools and to have a better future, free from oppression.
Sadly, Kevin was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while on his very last night patrol, just two days before the end of his tour of duty. He was buried with full military honours in the National Military Cemetery, Ottawa.
Kevin was known to have a keen wit and a great sense of humour. He smiled easily and laughed often. He loved his family, friends and army pals and they loved him in return.
He will be missed.
He was everyone’s friend.
Kevin was a goalie with Oro Minor Hockey but donned a different
uniform with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry
Kevin appears to share a humorous moment with some tyke-aged children in Afghanistan.
