LATE EVENING SHOWDOWN ENDS WITH A BOOM FOR THE THUNDER!
Georgian Bay Playoff Series
Game 1 – Oro vs. Wasaga
Wednesday, February 18th
7-4, ORO

Our G.B. playoffs would begin with a tough test against Wasaga Beach.  We had not seen Wasaga since the Silver Stick qualifier in November.  The Thunder were fortunate to come away with a hard fought 6-2 victory that day.  The mid-week showdown took place on the road with a late 7:20 p.m. start.

The first period was a little lack luster for both teams and both coaching staffs were looking for a spark.  Our spark would come first deep in the Wasaga end.  On a beautiful, clean face off win from Devin to Logan, Logan wasted no time delivering a hard wrist shot past a surprised and screened Beach goalie.

The good fortune sparked an immediate response from the next line as Sam found Noal in the slot.  With a quick release, Noal fired a devastating wrist shot to the top of the net, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead to finish the first.

The Thunder’s offensive game really got rolling in the second with multiple players hitting the score sheet.  Devin pushed the lead to 3 on a beautiful shot worthy of the TSN highlight reel.  Jack continued the assault, finishing off a breakaway in great style.  Caden got into the action, bulging the twine on back to back occasions, extending the lead to 6-0 after 2 periods.  The offensive explosions were created by great hustle and puck movement by our defencemen and forwards.

The third started out a little rough for the visitors.  In what has normally been our best period all year, our lack of compete allowed the home team to get back into the game and create some momentum.  In the first 3 minutes of the third, the home side would score 4 times.  The coaching staff called for an immediate time-out so the group could re-set and focus after a tumultuous start.

To the boys’ credit they found their way and settled into their normal rhythm.  Owen and Nick locked the D-Corps down with suffocating man to man coverage.  Wesley and Logan were tenacious with their puck pursuit and quickly took away Wasaga scoring chances.

Great credit goes to our wingers who controlled pucks along the boards.  Taylor and Sam were especially good at chipping pucks past pinching defenders.  Our 7th and final goal would come on such a play.  On a hard rim around the boards, Taylor quickly controlled the puck.  As a Wasaga defender attacked down the wall, Taylor used his quick hands to poke the puck past.  As Caden came for support, the puck magically appeared for him.  With slick moves and a great shot, the 7th and final goal hit the back of the net.

Kudos to Jensen, our all-star goalie!  Jensen provided rock solid net minding all game but particularly good late in the 3rd as Wasaga was trying to get back in the game.

Great job, guys!
