Message From the President
Submitted By Mark Raven on Thursday, March 28, 2019
Hello Oro Thunder Families,

Despite feeling like a looong winter, it's hard to believe we are in the last week of the season! The Board of Directors would like to thank all the players, coaches, referees, arena staff and volunteers for helping make Oro a great place to play minor hockey. There will always be bumps on the road but our goal is to provide the best possible environment for players to learn, develop and grow on and off the ice.

For the 3rd year in a row, the season kicked off with the Jack McCullough Memorial Golf Tournament at Shanty Bay Golf Club. It was a great success and the money raised is put towards player development. We stepped straight from the golf course to the ice with tryouts for our Rep teams the following day.

Once the season started, our Local League teams continued to be amongst the strongest in Georgian Bay. We had representation in league finals across all age groups. Some teams are still playing so there's a great chance we will have multiple teams finishing the season as champions. Bantam LL2 should also be acknowledged for a great season. They won the Wasaga Beach Tournament in late December and followed it up by winning the Lincoln Tournament over March Break. They are currently leading their A Pool championship series against Flesherton.

Overall our Rep teams continue to be in tough during the regular season but showed up to battle every game. During the playoffs, Rep and AE teams play in both OMHA Playdowns and League Playoffs. Oro showed a huge improvement in OMHA Playdowns over previous years with Atom Rep, Atom AE, and Peewee AE advancing. Our Peewee AE team led the way making it all the way to the OMHA Semi-Finals! They are only the second Oro team to advance that far in the past 5 years. Rarified air for sure and they had the organization buzzing.

We also had 5 teams advance to Georgian Bay Finals. Novice Rep won their Finals against Wasaga Beach. Not surprisingly Peewee AE continued their strong play and swept Owen Sound in the Georgian Bay Championship Finals.

Looking forward to next season and beyond, the organization is in a great position. Registration numbers have steadily increased over the past few years and we expect this to continue. The great news is close to 100 of our players are under the age of 9. We are determined to keep these players engaged and having fun.  Expect some exciting changes for our youngest players next year!

In closing, I would like to thank all the Oro Thunder Families for their time, effort and energy throughout the season.

Have a great summer and I hope to see you back at the rink in September!

Scott Bjaanes
