Flash Storm Hits Elmvale Late
The Thunder were battling Elmvale 2 late Sunday in a game that had coaches shaking their heads at the poor first period, then shaking them again in amazement at the incredible plays come second.
The team looked a little sleepy to start this game...and post game it hit me that maybe the late two hour practice made for heavy legs.
No matter,Elmvale came out poised and their big D were stepping up with tight gaps and stopping rushes, frustrating our forward group.
Coyotes got on the board early with a slot shot and we struggled to respond with an answer
Our defense was solid all game however, and despite some miscues, were trying out new concepts and making really smart plays inside the offensive zone. A little more net presence for tips and rebounds would have resulted in some early tallies as the points were getting shots to the net.
We woke them up between periods and said lets focus and bring your A game..stat!
And did they.
Eric (Doogie) opened the floodgates early second on helpers from Chase(r) and Hayden..and we didn't look back.
Aidan had an incredible shift thereafter on a rink long racing backcheck to close the boards then Magoo and Big Ben retrieved, found him again for a nifty breakaway where he used his patented deke to leave the goalie reaching at air
Awesome effort from the Roadrunner!
We asked the forwards to use the points more and they delivered.
Eric (Flash) delivered a one timer after a feed from Owen and the screened goalie never saw it hit the back of the net.
Flash was all over the ice this game, leading rushes (with great covers from Jacob and Ben) and racing back to quell attacks. Had a bank shot second goal and fabulous all round game (we'll talk about the blind d to d later :)
Congrats on Player of the Game Eric!
Not to be overlooked was Chase's performance tonight
He got progressively stronger game long and used his incredible finish and playmaking to tally an eight point evening! (4-4)
Keep up the great work Chaser!!
Magoo was working his wing hard game long and got rewarded when he destroyed the top twine with his killer wrist shot. That's got some awes from the crowd.!
Speaking of hard workers, Big Ben was a tank on the boards competing and found himself in alone high slot wide to absolutely SNIPE a far side wristsnap. His teammates roared on the bench and think I heard Dad let out a hoot too:)
Owen closed the scoring at 12 and we called it a night
Despite the huge goal tallies,I believe this game was a breakout performance for the D
Every man played a solid game, and worked together exceptionally well
Hayden had a three point night, and was simply a force.
The Tower of Power was a shutdown monster and made heads up plays game long.
Colt 45 was his characteristic steady self..but has really taken the next step to add offense to his game by moving the puck, rushing and always having his partners back.
Connor, always dependable defensively and engaged physically, was rushing the puck and made several great d to D plays with his partner Flash.
Harry (and the Henderson's) was,as always,a steadying force.
His kept his big point shots low and tippable/reboundable all night, and the forwards need to really drive the net when they see the big guy wind up.
Finally Ty had his best game of the season, and held the point fabulously all night.
I saw very smart point passes to hit open wingers down low,a nice head man on a rush and simple strong plays in the d zone. Excellent head's up play tonight son.
Last, but never least, Justin wasn't overly tested (see D) but came up big when needed.
His gaa dropped again to a shade over 1.00...pretty heady stuff young man!
But it bears reminding that we will need a full three period effort in the coming week
Two strong teams await the Thunder and will test us thoroughly
I know with proper focus...this team is up to the challenge
See you Friday boys and congrats on the 4-0 start
Final; Oro 12 Elmvale 1
