Roadrunner Burns The Flames
Thunder were back on the road again, this time travelling to Penetang for an afternoon match vs our old rivals.
Oro came prepared for tough match against a Flames team that has been playing well against league leaders and sure enough Doogie wasted no time drilling his deadly wrister with an apple from Maguire a minute in to play.
Magoo played his first game on D in a very long time, and got progressively more comfortable through a game where we saw him rushing the puck, making smart center ice passes and getting reaccustomed to winding up his hard wrister from long range. Our Atom 2012/13 MVP at D is a valuable asset to the team no matter where he plays
Chaser was a beast playing the pivot spot first half of this game. Played a determined two way game and scored the next two goals making magic with Doogie shift after shift. There is a natural chemistry there and these two players look like they have played together forever. Chase drilled a rope bar down that nobody saw...simply heard. Assists to Hayden on and Doog on the two markers.
Up 3 ot after one, the strong play continued.
Flash had a sweet rink long rush and when it broke up/went the other way,put his head down to catch up and steal the puck back from the Penetang attacker. Superb effort Eric.
Aidan was on fire this match too.
The Roadrunner can always be counted on as "third D" and was making hard rushes game long, distributing the puck from the pivot position. He put on the jets and found himself alone 2-0 with Jacob where he pulled the goalie wide on backhand and slid it over to Taz on a tee for the easy tap in.
He was in turn the recipient of a similar passing play from Ty to Doogie who hit him in the slot for a high flip glove side
Two beautiful to watch, selfless plays that are becoming the trademark of this team
Combined with his tireless two way effort, The Roadrunner was our player on the game
Hard,smart work Aidan!!
Other play of mention included three consecutive face off wins by Doog to Hayden for point blasts in the third.
The Tower of Power didn't have time to Release the Kraken, but smartly ripped quick shots towards the net as the circumstances dictated. Winning over coaches with that set play execution boys.
We saw heads up point covers this game from Big Ben, Taz and Ty for our eager rushing d-men.
Big Ben made several nice passes and showed dogged determination on puck battles.
Ben is growing into a force on forward and his board play is exemplary.
Colt 45 continued his quietly effective play and that's always a compliment for a defenseman.
An encouraged and accepted challenge to rush the puck and make heads up plays en route is rounding out this young man's game exceptionally .
Fast Eddie had some close chances and played strong going to the net, stick on ice just as asked by coaches.
A sweet backhand pass to Owen early almost found twine.
Owen was kept off the scoreboard unusually, but played a hard game and headmanned the puck well at center.
Our four centers play half games at wing and their preferred position and have done so without complaint.
Continued determination at both positions will serve this team well.
And Justin was...well Justin
Great angles and agility shut down any close range attempts and he looked solidly positioned all game to register his second shutout of this early season..which he did. Keep it up keeper!
Post game we rewarded those that completed the Cardio,Power,Skills First Edition with Magoo and Doogie getting the lucky draw for Thunder toques.
Get a head start working(and counting) all over again boys as we will announce the next routine Tues in Elmvale
And finally the long awaited Captains
There were too many great choices for captaincies,so we asked the boys to vote
for their two top choices.
Why two and not three many asked
I had conferred with Coach Ian before he departed on vacation/ discussed amongst coaches and it was unanimously agreed that the proud honour of Thunder Captain should be awarded to Harry
As said in the room upon his acceptance, this young man has been thoroughly impressive both on ice in games/practice and in our room. He speaks up appropriately, takes instruction to heart/ applies immediately and is truly a natural leader. Congrats Captain, you deserve it,and we know you'll do this team proud season long.
The boys nominated Doogie and Hayden as our Assistants...both great choices!
Our team is very fortunate to have so many previous captains and leaders on this team that there will never be a void...and we expect that leadership to continue from all players.
All Captains (and others willing) will be asked to address the team from time to time, pre/post game..a new wrinkle we added last season to great success.
And a special note..Justin asked to remove himself from voting as he felt being a captain was too difficult for a goalie who cannot cross center ice to speak with officials.
Another example of the selfless leadership in this room...and a huge glove tap from coach young man.
Very impressed.
With all this character in our room I suspect the Thunder will keep on rolling as an irrepressible force season long
No matter the end results, I am proud to coach this fine group of young men
Final
