Oro Thunder Joins Owen Sound Attack

The two Atom Rep teams joined forces as ‘Hockey Fights Cancer’. To show support for Vanessa, an Owen Sound hockey mom with terminal cancer, the two hockey families came together this past weekend at the Oro arena. The players showed solidarity for ‘Pink Up The Rink’ through a unity of pink hockey tape on their sticks, shin pads and gloves. Pink ‘V’ stickers on all player helmets displayed compassion for Vanessa. Thank you for your generosity of donations, funds from seven Oro gate fees, a fifty/fifty draw, bake sale, ribbons and various stickers. Thank you Atom Rep families for Paying It Forward - it always wins!

Here is a letter from Vanessa:

To Our Extended Hockey Family: the Parents, Players and Coaches of the Oro Thunder Atom Hockey Team,

My family’s hearts are so full from your team’s generosity, supportive and loving spirit.  It took the weekend to fully take in the moment and many tears of joy to share the news fully.  Jim, Emmett, my Mom and I were awestruck, without words at the pureness of heart your team received us...

I know we are a community of hockey and we come together to support and help one another; that is one of the most special things about sport that we love.  Your act of kindness is the most valuable lesson we can all benefit from – these 9 and 10 year old children participating, observing and being part of a gift beyond themselves to strangers.

Our family has been touched many times with generous acts from our family and friends. With Saturday’s game, we realized that even people who don’t know you can extend kindness that you have never experienced. Thank you for the incredible kindness that you have shown our family. We will never forget it.

We are overwhelmed with the love and support your team has shown. You are truly a “class-act” or better a “human act”. In honor of your team, we will share your generosity and help others in need in the Oro community, who are battling cancer.

We celebrated Christmas on Sunday, a full month early. We feel, in a way, that Santa found his way to us through you.

Thank you for being the wonderful people that you are.

Love,Vanessa Arthur and Family xoxo
