MID-WEEK SHOWDOWN WITH THE CYCLONES
Stayner – Wednesday, October 22, 2014
12-2, ORO
Wednesday night brought our first match of the season with the Cyclones of Stayner.  This was our first time back on the ice since our triumphant return from Parry Sound.  The coaches were hoping the boys would be able to re-focus after such an exciting weekend!

As the puck was dropped at the opening face-off, the boys quickly gained immediate control of the puck and applied relentless pressure on the Stayner net.  Much praise should be given to the Stayner goalie, as he was a first-time net minder and made many key saves for his team.  Due to his perseverance, the score was just 3-1 Oro after the first.

Even with a lead heading into the second, the coaches asked the players to play like a more cohesive unit – to make smart passes, and to set-up better plays.  The boys took this message to heart and delivered two goals within the first minute of the second.  Special mention goes out to Taylor...our hard-working left-winger, who has been a little snake-bitten around the net.  He drove hard to the net, kept his feet moving, picked up a juicy rebound from Jack and Caden and deposited it to the back of the net! Way to go number 12!

We’ve been talking with the team all year about the importance of playing for the name on the FRONT of the jersey, not the back.  And so, assists and team play are what we strive for to support our team on the ice.  Owen notched 3 assists this game, demonstrating not only his excellent defensive skills, but also that he is a top-notch offensive player.  Others with sweet assists included Devin, Nicky, Sammy, Logan, and Wesley.

After a solid second and the Thunder leading 6-1, the coaches asked some of the players if they would be interested in trying a new position so others could have an understanding and perspective of what it’s like to play out of their comfort zone.  Without hesitation, Jack, Caden, Noal and Devin volunteered to play defense, so our 4 defensemen could have an opportunity to play offense.  Noal and the others assumed their new positions, shutting down any Cyclone advances with great ease.  In addition, Nicky took-on his forward positioning like a natural and was rewarded with a glorious opportunity – hammering home a great first goal set-up by Logan and Sammy.

Once again, Jenson was at his best between the pipes.  It’s certainly a great luxury to have such a quality goaltender on our team.

Keep up the great play, boys!
