Stayner – Saturday, November 8, 2014
11-1, ORO
Saturday had the Thunder in the town of friendly people! With Sammy still in sick bay, we thankfully had
Dylan to fill in who was ready and willing to help his team mates out!
The game started out a little slow, with Stayner forcing numerous turnovers in the Thunder zone and creating several quality scoring chances. As per usual, Jensen threw up a brick wall until his team mates could find their legs and start playing “Thunder” hockey. Jensen – you are a force to be reckoned with!
Devin broke the ice to put the Thunder on the board on a terrific feed from Taylor who continues to impress us with his passing and heads up play! To round out the first period, Caden notched a pair on two solo coast to coast rushes which revved up players and fans alike!
During practices in the past several weeks the team has worked diligently on moving and sharing the puck quickly to create scoring chances. During the second period some of that hard work began to pay off as the Thunder banged home three more goals with dimes being dropped by Dylan, Taylor and Logan. Noal also demonstrated great passing to his line mates! These boys were models for their team mates as it shows that by sharing and moving the puck quickly we were able to transition from defense to offense and extend our lead.
At the start of the third, and the Thunder in control, the boys continued to transfer skills and concepts from practices to thwart any Cylcone attacks. Special mention goes to Wesley and Owen who took Friday’s defensive angling drills to heart and put it into action by forcing all Cyclone forwards wide and into the corners to negate any Stayner scoring opportunities. Logan found his legs and some puck luck in the third, as he formulated a plan and attacked the Stayner net with speed. He was decisive and unleashed his devastating wrist shot with great precision. Nicky was a force all day long. He made several great D to D passes, and impressed the coaches with his great “Shake and Bake” move at the Cyclone blue line to create a scoring opportunity for himself and the team.
To round out the game, Jack raced all the way back to our end to retrieve a loose puck showing amazing back checking and speed. As we’ve talked about many times, we ask the boys to “make a play” rather than just shoot the puck away. Jack carried the puck behind our net and made a slick tape-to-tape pass to Devin who went in alone. Like Sydney Crosby with his patented leg kick, he pulled the puck to his back hand and slid it past the Stayner goalie to conclude our day.
With no games this week, we are looking forward to a good week of practices to be ready to meet our next challengers...the Owen Sound Jr. Attack.
